For Fickett Elementary, Haiti is more than an island in the Caribbean sea. With daily French classes and a teacher with Haitian roots, Fickett chose to act quickly to contribute to the country’s disaster relief efforts. On Jan. 21, more than 500 students packed Fickett’s gym for a sock hop to raise funds for Haitian earthquakes victims. With a $1.00 admission fee and a packed concession stand, Fickett raised over $1,000.
Fickett’s French students also wrote letters of hope to the people of Haiti. The letters included the Haitian flag and a special message in French. “Fickett wanted to show how much they care for the world around them,” said Principal Dr. Anthony Dorsey. “Hopefully, the money will help in aiding Haiti.” Haitian Ministry Theophile Church in Christ, located in southeast Atlanta, will receive the funds raised by Fickett for use in the Haitian relief effort.
