Students enrolled in APS’ three year-round schools return to classes for the new school year Wednesday, July 13, 2011. The district’s year-round schools are Boyd, Centennial Place and Hutchinson elementary schools.
The year-round school option began several years ago as an alternative to the traditional school calendar. Centennial Place and Boyd elementary schools were the first APS schools to adopt the year-round schedule during the 1999-2000 school year. Hutchinson Elementary School became a year-round school in 2004.
“It is important for parents to ensure that their children are prepared and ready to return to school on the first day of classes, because teaching and learning start right away on Day One,” said Interim Superintendent Erroll Davis. “We use the summer break period to thoroughly clean and service our schools and provide professional development for teachers and staff so that everything and everyone is ready to go on that first day.”
The first day of classes for APS schools on the traditional calendar is Monday, August 8, 2011. The APS traditional and year-round calendars are posted on the district Web site (www.atlantapublicschools.us).
