Principal selection process is top topic at District 4 community meeting

More than 150 parents and community members attended the District 4 community meeting hosted by board member Nancy Meister at North Atlanta High School this week. Board Chair Reuben McDaniel also attended the event.

Before fielding questions, Superintendent Davis talked about the state of APS and efforts to ensure systemic improvement across our school system. Although audience members asked questions about a range of topics – such as the new graduation rate calculation, class sizes and budget cuts – the principal selection process was the common topic of interest.

Arguably, the position of school principal is one of the hardest jobs on the planet. It is certainly one of the most important, which is why our school system has designed a thoughtful process to ensure broad participation in the interview process for principals. After candidates pass multiple levels of the selection process – including initial screening, background checks and a written description of their capabilities – they will be interviewed and scored by a panel of school-community stakeholders as listed below. Candidates with the top scores move on to an interview with the deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction before the superintendent makes the final recommendation to the school board.

Members of the principal interview panel:

·         Local school council chair or designee

·         PTSA chair or designee

·         School’s current teacher of the year

·         Student (representative from the student government organization or the president of the student body)

·         Peer principal at the appropriate level

·         School’s regional K-12 executive director

·         HR representative

A representative from the architecture firm that was hired for the construction/renovation of North Atlanta High School gave a presentation on the status of the capital improvement project. The audience also heard presentations and comments from Interim Chief Human Resources Officer Mike Gray, Deputy Superintendent of Operations Larry Hoskins, Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Karen Waldon, and East Region K-12 Executive Director Dave White.

Associate Superintendent Steve Smith and other APS leaders were present to speak one on one with parents.
