Congratulations are in order for Carver School of Technology, one of 14 schools across the country to receive a $100,000.00 grant from State Farm Insurance as a part of the nationwide “Celebrate My Drive” initiative.
The grant was awarded to the school for receiving an overwhelming number of votes to promote the Celebrate My Drive safety campaign. On Wednesday October 17, 2012, State Farm Community Relations Specialist, Renata Dugans and Vice-President of Operations, Tyrone Smith, presented a check to the school in a school-wide assembly. The grant will be used to promote student achievement through the after school enrichment program, S.W.A.G. Academy (Students With Academic Greatness), provide professional development for teachers, and increase technology integration in the classroom.
In the weeks preceding the award, State Farm teamed up with the students at Carver School of Technology to host a Teen Safety Driving Event.
The event was open to all students at the school to promote safe driving practices and to celebrate new drivers. The three-hour event included breakout sessions for the teens as well as public service announcements, driver safety trivia, and the Steer Clear Workshop. There were prizes, games, food, and a host of giveaways from State Farm.
At the conclusion of the event, students signed a pledge card to commit to adhering to the rules of the road at all times while driving.
About Celebrate My Drive:
Car crashes are the number one killer of teens, according to the Center for Disease Control, and their first year on the road as a new driver is the most dangerous. Though traditional scare tactics can be engaging for some, State Farm® and others believe a supportive and positive approach to teen driver safety in addition to education, awareness, legislation and enforcement is key to keeping teens engaged and safe on the road. With this in mind, State Farm is debuting a different teen driver safety program called Celebrate My Drive™.
