Last Friday, Benjamin E. Mays High School Raiders advanced to the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state Class AAAAA football semifinals for the first time in the school’s history, after a memorable 44-41 victory over Jones County High. The Raiders are the first Atlanta Public Schools to reach the semifinals since Grady High School in 2005. Tonight, the Raiders will take on Stockbridge High School Tigers at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the gate for adults and children. The school is located at 1151 Old Conyers Rd., Stockbridge, GA 30281. Parking is free.
The Mays football team journey began this season when they pulled off a stunning upset over the previously #1 ranked Ware County Gators on November 21 with a 21-18 victory, in Waycross. With this win, the Raiders advanced to the state quarterfinals for the first time in the school’s history!
Last week, the Raiders hosted the Jones County Greyhounds on Friday night at Lakewood Stadium, making it the first time since 2010, that Atlanta Public Schools hosted a quarterfinal football game.
The Raiders defeated the Greyhounds 44-41 on the final play of the game with a 17-yard pass from Asahnia Aderhold to Julius Whitehead.
