Five APS Basketball Teams Advance to Round Two of State Playoffs

GHSA Basketball

The Henry W. Grady High School boys, Maynard H. Jackson girls, Benjamin E. Mays boys and girls, and South Atlanta boys basketball teams all advanced out of the first round of the Georgia High Schools Association state playoffs. The teams will compete in Round 2 contests on Friday and Saturday.

Five Atlanta Public Schools basketball teams have advanced to Round 2 of the Georgia High School Association state basketball tournament in their respective classifications. All five will be back in action on Friday or Saturday.

Henry W. Grady (boys)
The Grey Knights (26-3), the No. 1 seed from Class AAAA Region 6, blasted Pickens County (9-20), 78-44, Wednesday night. Grady will host Mary Persons (17-11) of Forsyth, Saturday at 6 p.m.

Maynard H. Jackson (girls)
The Lady Jaguars (27-1), the Class AAA Region 4 champions, have won 25 straight games after mauling Tattnall County, 61-23, Tuesday night. Jackson, which has not lost a game in the year 2016, will host Hart County (24-5), the No. 2 seed from Region 8, Friday at 6 p.m.

Benjamin E. Mays (boys and girls)
The Lady Raiders (20-7) are the No. 2 seed from Class AAAAA Region 6. They hammered Kell of Marietta, 69-46, Tuesday night to advance to the second round. They will now travel to Grovetown (28-1), near Augusta, for Round 2, Friday at 6 p.m. Grovetown is the No. 1 seed from Region 2.  The Mays boys team (12-13) defeated Sequoyah of Canton, 72-65, on Wednesday. The Raiders, the No. 3 seed from Class AAAAA Region 6, will host Jones County (16-12), the No. 4 seed from Region 2, Saturday at 5:30 pm.

South Atlanta (boys)
The Hornets (23-6), the No. 3 seed from Class AAA Region 4, outlasted Johnson-Savannah, 63-57, Wednesday night. South Atlanta will travel to Hogansville, near Columbus, to face Callaway (18-3), the Region 5 champions, Saturday at 5 p.m.
