Several groups of Inman Middle School Theater Arts students recently participated in the Ryan Cameron Foundation Youth Anti-Violence Arts Contest. Hosted by popular V-103 radio host Ryan Cameron, the contest serves as an opportunity for youth to share their artwork, poetry, essays, or 60-second video skits on the topics of bullying or teen safe driving.
One of Inman’s teams – comprised of eighth graders Amelia Kushner, Remy Pair and Sadie Mothershed – won the $1,500 first-place prize for their anti-bullying public service announcement. For their efforts, the students created a 60-second PSA about bullying awareness and anti-bullying titled, “The Unspeakable.” The PSA’s theme was to spotlight the complications in peer relationships and how those complications can lead to bullying, isolation and suicide.
“This started as a simple class project infused into the theater arts curriculum as an extension of our social-emotional learning initiative,” explained Shenise Spann, theatre arts educator at Inman. “I am beyond pleased with the results. The winners were not able to be present to receive the award, so Hanna Willis (eighth grade), Jeb Davis (sixth grade), and Malori Switzer (sixth grade) gave up their time to participate in the youth forum and represent Inman and accept the award on behalf of Amelia, Remy and Sadie. Teamwork makes the dream work, so kudos to them as well.”
