Spring Sports Update: Mays Baseball Starting Fast

The Benjamin E. Mays baseball team is off to a fast start. The Raiders, who advanced to the state playoffs last season, are 11-1 overall and 7-0 in Class AAAAA, Region 6.

The Mays baseball team is off to one of its best starts in team history. After advancing to the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state playoffs last year, the Raiders are 11-1 overall and undefeated (7-0) in region competition (Class AAAAA, Region 6). The team, coached by Michael Jennings, is led by a core group of eight seniors:  Captains Xzavion Curry and Tervont Johnson, Santonio Mapp, D’Anthony Morrow, Isaiah Blasingame, Keevis Montgomery, Blake Fraley, and Malique Foreman.

In other spring sports news …

— The Maynard H. Jackson girls track team is picking up where it left off last season. The Lady Jaguars won the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class AAA state championship last year and the squad has picked up an award already this season. The 1,600-meter relay unit was named the Class AAA Relay Team of the Week by Georgia Milesplit.com, the state’s premier track and field website.

— Also picking up Georgia Milesplit weekly honors were Jackson’s Quazon Alkhaliq and Grady’s Babakarr Randall. Alkhaliq, a senior, has the state’s best triple jump mark regardless of classification, with a leap of 47-feet, 7 ½-inches. Randall, a junior, has the fastest time in Class AAAA in the 100 meters at 10.88 seconds.

— The Atlanta Public Schools Championships, also known as the Atlanta Track Classic, will be held at Lakewood Stadium, Saturday, March 26 and Monday, March 28. This is the annual event where schools and athletes earn “bragging rights” over their fellow competitors in APS. Field events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with preliminaries in the running events and relays beginning at 1 p.m. Finals for all running events and relays are Monday, beginning at 6 p.m. Admission: $5 (Free for children eight-years-old and younger)
