ICYMI (In Case You Missed It): Grady Storms into the AJC Top 10

Grady senior quarterback/defensive back Caylin Newton led the Gray Knights to a 14-10 upset win over Woodward Academy, Friday at Grady Stadium.

The Gray Knights of Grady pulled off the biggest win of the weekend for an Atlanta Public School, knocking off Woodward Academy – a team that had been ranked No. 2 in Class AAAA in the Atlanta Journal Constitution/Georgia High School Football Daily Top 10 – 14-10. The win vaulted Grady, now 2-0, into the AJC/GHSFD Top 10 for Class AAAAA schools at No. 10 this week.

Grady trailed 10-7 midway through the fourth quarter, when senior quarterback Caylin Newton scored from 1-yard out to give the Gray Knights the lead. Newton led the way on offense, rushing for 207 yards while completing 12-of-18 passes for 96 yards. On defense, senior defensive end Kemari Averett had three tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Here’s how the other APS teams faired over the weekend:

Wesleyan 48, B.E.S.T. Academy 34
The Eagles put up a great fight against one of the strongest private school teams in Class A.

KIPP Atlanta Collegiate 14, North Springs 8
The Warriors are 2-0 for the first time in the brief three-year history of the football program.

Stockbridge 35, Mays 34
The Raiders dropped a tightly-contested battle in which no team led the other by more than seven points at any time during the game.

Therrell 28, Maynard Jackson 0
The Panthers knocked off their APS rivals for the first time since 2009 and shut them out for the first time in school history.

North Clayton 30, Washington 7
The Bulldogs fell in their first-ever match up against the Eagles.
