It was almost as exciting as the first day of school for the students and staff of William M. Boyd Elementary School as they unveiled their newly renovated campus Thursday, March 23rd during a ribbon cutting ceremony.
One of the most exciting features of the renovation is the state-of-the-art sound system for the gymnasium/cafeteria. The beautiful voices of the Boyd elementary choir resonated in the space, which is just a small portion of their $11 million renovation. The bright, new facility also offers open plan classrooms and instructional spaces; a new school entry feature with a security vestibule; an open courtyard featuring an outside amphitheater; and general improvements that span from new voice and video systems to new interior and exterior signage.
When the renovations to this STEM-focused school began in July of 2015, no one knew the staggering potential of this school site. Even Deputy Superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools, David Jernigan, was astounded by the appearance of the new campus.
“Today is a celebration! It’s awesome to be in a place that’s such a special place for kids” Jernigan said. “And to finally see a building that really sends the message that they [Boyd students and faculty] matter…it’s beautiful, bright and shiny, and a great place for children to learn.”
Jernigan is not the only one who could hardly contain his excitement. Boyd Elementary Assistant Principal, Ernest Sessoms, Jr., remembers how the campus looked before renovations were even in the works.
“I’m very excited to be a part of this event today. I’ve seen us as a school come full circle from our old building to our new state-of-the-art facility” said Sessoms.
When the campus renovations were completed at the end of 2016, Boyd elementary not only wowed parents and Boyd educators, but the transformation astonished community members and key stakeholders, as well.
Jernigan summed up the ceremony on a high note saying: “The building is not the school, [rather] the school are the people, the spirit, the energy, the commitment and investment the people in this room represent.
