Tanasha Mahone, a third-grade teacher at Burgess-Peterson Academy, has received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).
The PAEMST program, administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, recognizes outstanding teachers for their contributions to the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science. Each awardee received a citation signed by the president and a $10,000 award from NSF. Awardees traveled to Washington, DC, for an awards ceremony on Oct. 18.
“Receiving the Presidential Award is truly remarkable in that this honor also celebrates the countless students, colleagues, and communities of influential people that have elevated my career throughout pivotal moments,” Mahone said. “As a recipient of this award, I am excited and inspired to continue learning and developing as a teacher, leader, and caring collaborator for all the stakeholders I encounter in the future.”
Mahone began her career in education with Teach for America and has spent the past 11 years working as a teacher and school leader in urban education. She currently teaches all third-grade subjects at Burgess-Peterson Academy. She previously taught for four years at Bolton Academy and three years at E. Rivers Elementary School.
