Story contributed by Angelica Pugh, South Atlanta High School drama and dance instructor
On Oct. 24, the dance department of South Atlanta High School premiered their very first dance production: S.H.E.
“S.H.E stands for She Has Evolved,” said Angelica Pugh, South Atlanta High School drama and dance instructor. “I came up with this dance production to tell stories of women who evolve through different emotions through life. As a new teacher to South Atlanta High School and given the opportunity to build this new program, I thought that it’d be a great idea to do a similar production for the students to participate. Being that they already deal with a multitude of emotions, what better way to express them than by using dance as a platform.”
The production included various dance styles from modern to hip hop and featured students from both Pugh’s first and fourth period dance classes.
“Our goal as a dance department is to not only make students confident in learning and performing but to gain resources to build the program,” Pugh said.
With a successful one-night run and a positive response from the audience, the students will have another opportunity to perform for the faculty, staff and students before Thanksgiving break. Students will also perform in the Cluster Night Winter Extravaganza in December.
