Cheers and school spirit filled the gymnatorium as alumni of Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College and Spelman College descended upon the campus of Cleveland Avenue Elementary for SWAG Friday on Nov. 22!
“SWAG is an acronym that means See What Achievement Gets,” explained Dr. Anyee’ Payne, Cleveland Avenue Elementary principal. “We want to expose our students to different colleges and universities, including degrees offered, college life and career pathways. I believe in the mantra that ‘you can’t be what you don’t see,’ so it is essential that we provide this opportunity for our scholars to see what is possible.”
Throughout the school year, Cleveland Elementary School will highlight various colleges and universities. Students conduct research about the institution of higher learning, including courses of study offered and notable alumni, and then present their findings at SWAG Friday pep rallies.
On Nov. 22, students highlighted current and former members of the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUC), which consists of Atlanta’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Notable alumni recognized include actress Keshia Knight Pulliam (Spelman), radio personality Derrick Boazman (Morris Brown), civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Morehouse) and TV writer/producer Kenya Barris (Clark Atlanta).
The pep rally featured performances from Cleveland Avenue Elementary School’s drumline and Mahogany-N-Motion (inspired by the official dance team of Spelman College and the Morehouse College House of Funk band).
Current AUC students and APS’ own AUC alumni also provided brief introductions, including: third-grade teacher Dr. Chalitta Bishop, math instructional coach Kimberly Lawrence, media specialist Denise Merriell, STEM specialist Starla Freeman, and fourth-grade science/social studies teacher Jerry Woodfork (Clark Atlanta alumni); Assistant Principal Lamar Billups (Morehouse); school business manager Renika Smith and special education coordinator Tilnisha Rosser (Morris Brown); kindergarten teacher Amber Mack and remediation and support coordinator Deanna Rogers (Spelman).
