APS Update with Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring Week of August 3

Good day, Atlanta Public Schools!

I’m Dr. Lisa Herring, Superintendent. Welcome back to our weekly APS Update where we provide you with a video summary of the news and information you need to know most as we prepare for a strong start on Day One!

To prepare students, families, teachers, and staff for a great Day One, we have created a Runway for a Return to Learning!

The Runway for Return to Learning

As part of that Runway, we have developed two weeks of pre-planning for our teachers and staff, who returned to work in force on Monday, August 3. These activities are mostly virtual, but some may be in person and in small groups. During this time, we are providing professional development to prepare all our staff for our virtual teaching and learning model districtwide.

As part of the Runway, we are paying particular attention to student wellness and preparation. We will find multiple ways – as part of our trauma to transition efforts – to connect with students to build relationships and ensure good mental health. This work is essential to ensure that all of our students – and all of us – remain well through these challenging moments.

During the week of August 17-21, all activities will be mostly virtual with some in-person activities needed in small or limited groups for parents to pick up needed supplies and materials for the first nine weeks. Please contact your school for more specific information about activities that week.

We need our students and our families engaged during that week so we have a running start for Day One on Monday, August 24.

Devices and Technology

To assist us with identifying those students who do not have sufficient technology, please complete our technology survey by August 7 to ensure your child has the technology needed by Day One. That survey is available on our website at http://www.atlantapublicschools.us.

Also, we remain in partnership with Comcast through the Get Our Kids Connected campaign. If you know an APS student who needs internet service please email getourkidsconnected@apsk12.org or call 404 802 KIDS (5437).

Nutrition

As a reminder, our Nutrition Department will resume community feeding next week, as part of the Summer Seamless Option waiver granted by the federal government.

Meals will be provided to all children in the community on Monday, August 10, and Monday, August 17. Five-day meal bags with five breakfast meals and five lunch meals will be distributed at the 14 schools shown here.

Our families can get those meals via walk up or drive-thru. Bus delivery of food will also be provided on some bus routes as shown in the attachment here.

As I close, I also want to remind everyone that it is essential that all families ensure that we have your current and correct contact information. This information is even more critical now as we plan to reopen virtually. We often have important updates to share with you and don’t want you to miss that information.

You can update your details in Infinite Campus or contact your school to provide your current contact information!

Thank you for watching our APS Update for the Week of August 3! Stay tuned, stay in touch, and most of all BE WELL!
