Self acceptance and self love are some of the greater gifts we can give our children. Anchored around Valentine’s Day, Atlanta Public Schools’ Media Services and Social Emotional Learning departments have partnered with the authors of MIRROR FACE, a picture book that teaches children to love themselves independently of the opinion of others and build their inner confidence.
Thanks to this partnership, 30,000 APS students (pre-k through 5th grade) received free digital copies of the book alongside a robust social emotional learning curriculum led by school media specialists.
“APS Media Services is on a mission to promote free choice reading for at least 20 minutes a day,” said Patrice Laird-Walker, media services coordinator. “When the opportunity was presented to partner with our SEL department to promote a book about self-love, we couldn’t have been more excited. Jordan Gillman and Michael Tyler have written a beautiful book reminding us how and why to love ourselves. It is our hope that our students will read this multiple times and log their minutes in Beanstack each time they read. The more you read, the more you know and grow. This book will help our students and families grow to love themselves and others.”
To bring the message of MIRROR FACE into the home, parents are also encouraged to participate in the following ways:
- Read MIRROR FACE everyday for 10 days (Feb. 8-Feb. 17)
- Log your minutes in Beanstack for our #RACE2Read challenge
- Complete these daily self-love activities with your child:
- Attend the culminating virtual event with your child on Feb. 17 at noon on www.facebook.com/atlantapublicschools. This virtual event will feature remarks from Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and APS Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring, and it will launch the #MirrorFaceChallenge.
