Atlanta Public Schools is pleased to announce that Benteen Elementary School has received authorization as an International Baccalaureate World School offering the Primary Years Programme! Benteen is the second traditional elementary school in the Jackson Cluster and one of 11 APS schools (traditional and charter) authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.
IB World Schools share a common philosophy — a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programs of international education that share a powerful vision.
The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme is a curriculum framework designed for students ages 3 to 12. The programme challenges students to think for themselves and take responsibility for their learning as they explore local and global issues and opportunities in real-life contexts.
“The journey towards IB authorization has been challenging and rewarding for students, staff, and our community,” Principal Dr. Andrew Lovett said. “We have grown as a school community and have become a stronger instructional staff as a result of learning more about inquiry-based instruction. Receiving this authorization helps solidify our place in the community as a school that is doing great things for children. Our IB authorization will further propel us to higher academic heights. This is only the beginning!”
APS offers three Signature Programs in an effort to ensure that every student has access to rigorous academic content. The College and Career Readiness, International Baccalaureate and STEM/STEAM programs are designed to support the APS mission of ensuring that every student will graduate ready for college, career, and life by preparing students for specialized academics and future career opportunities.
Signature Programs are a key feature of each cluster’s strategic plan, which respond to the needs and vision of each cluster’s community. The International Baccalaureate program is the Signature Program adopted by schools in the Jackson, Mays, North Atlanta and Therrell clusters.
