Student Innovators Are Encouraged to Sign Up for the 2022 APS Technology and Innovation Competition

Calling all student innovators!

The 2022 Atlanta Public Schools Technology and Innovation Competition is underway!

The districtwide submission window will be Tuesday, Jan. 18 through Friday, Jan. 31, 2022, providing our APS students the opportunity to showcase their 21st century technological skills, talent and creativity.

Students can work individually or with a partner to develop and present work at their school’s Tech Tournament, where they will compete for the top spots. While participants in grades 3-12 can only compete in one category, students in grades 7-12 can also take on the Programming Challenge. Each school can submit up to two winning projects per category in each grade band.  The grade bands are: grades 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12.

The categories available for the competition are : 3D Modeling, Animation, Audio Production, Device Modification, Digital Game Design, Digital Photo Production, Graphic Design, Internet Applications, Mobile Apps, Multimedia Applications, Productivity Design, Programming Challenge (grades 7-12 only), Project Programming, Robotics, and Video Production

APS Educational Technology Specialist Tanika Vincent is excited about this year’s entries and noted that students are encouraged to submit work in all content areas.

“Our students are creative, and they use and apply technology in all different aspects of their learning,” Vincent said. “We are in a new phase of education that requires our students to be producers of real-world, useful artifacts and information as they expand the borders of their network to be more diverse, accessible and innovative.”

From art to zoology, students in all subject areas have an opportunity to showcase their use of technology. The event puts special emphasis on the “personalized learning” focus of the APS 5 Strategic Plan, allowing students to express how much they love to learn as they bring forward new ideas and solve real-world problems through technology.

All of the APS district winners will be celebrated at the TOSCARS – the Technology Oscars – on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022 at 6:30 pm. This event will also be virtual and conducted via Zoom.

The first-place winners in each category and grade level at the district competition will advance to the Georgia Student Technology Competition (GaSTC). The GaSTC is the highest level of student technology competition in Georgia with over 750 projects, representing the work of over 1,000 students, which are judged at the competition each spring.
