APS Announces Child Savings for Kindergartners

APS kicked off the HOPE Child Savings Accounts Program Powered by the City of Atlanta (CSA). The event took place at Tuskegee Airmen Global Academy (TAG) where Dr. Lisa Herring, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, and Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms,  among others, spoke about the importance of savings, investing, and financial literacy

The excitement was palpable as Dr. Herring took the stage saying that, “This is an investment in our youth,” while thanking APS partners Operation HOPE, The City of Atlanta, and Citibank for “collectively demonstrating their commitment with their time, talent, and treasure.”

The CSA starts with a $50 initial deposit for every eligible kindergarten student at an APS Title 1 school and the money cannot be withdrawn until graduation. Additionally, it can only be used for qualifying educational expenses.

Before the event took place the kindergartners at TAG participated in a class discussion to learn about savings. They then drew pictures sharing why they are saving their money. Below are some of the drawings.

Here are some sights and sounds from the event:
