APS Baseball All-Stars to Face Cobb All-Stars in L.E.A.D. All-Star Baseball Classic at SunTrust Park

Atlanta Public Schools (APS) top high school baseball players will take on the best from Cobb County Schools in the first ever high school all-star game to be played at SunTrust Park.

The L.E.A.D. Legacy Classic will be played Saturday, June 3 at 11:30 a.m. The game is free to the public. The game was born out of the APS All-­Star Baseball Game presented by L.E.A.D, which was hosted at Turner Field last year and featured all-stars from all APS high schools.

The team will be coached by Jason Anderson of South Atlanta, William Brown of Therrell and Antonio Coger of Maynard Jackson.

The APS All-Stars are:

L.E.A.D., Inc. – which stands for Launch, Expose, Advise, Direct, Inc. – was co-founded by Atlanta native C.J. Stewart and his wife, Kelli, as a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower at-risk youth to lead and transform their city. The organization has partnered with APS to facilitate the district’s middle school baseball program.

Stewart, a former professional baseball player and baseball skills trainer, hopes the game will help foster unity in metro Atlanta.

“The L.E.A.D. All-­Star Baseball Classic will serve as an inspirational catalyst to first, unite student-athletes from different school districts, and position them to use the game they love as a unifier,” said Stewart. He went on to say, “I believe by empowering our youth through this game, they can lead the way in showing us how to be truly unified once and for all. We are excited about providing this platform for unity through the L.E.A.D. Classic via our partnership with APS and our collaboration with Cobb County Schools.”

Public Input Sought on District Budget Parameters and Scenarios for 2016-2017 School Year

2016-17 School Budget Community Meetings

Atlanta Public Schools will host four community meetings to gain feedback on the proposed budget for the 2016-2017 school year.

Atlanta Public Schools is continuing to advance through the district’s budgeting process, which began in September 2015, with the development of the budget parameters for the 2016-2017 school year. Now the district needs feedback from you.

During the March 7  Atlanta Board of Education meeting, APS Chief Financial Officer Robert Morales presented a plan to board members that aligns spending with the budget parameters and various budget scenarios. APS has scheduled four public hearings to provide more details on the district’s budget-building process and receive public comment on its Fiscal Year 2017 General Fund Budget scenarios.

The meeting schedule is as follows:

The Fiscal Year 2017 budget is expected to be presented to board members for tentative adoption on Monday, April 11.

“This is an opportunity for you to learn the basics of our budgeting process, receive an overview of our current budget challenges and parameters, and provide your feedback,” Morales said. “Our goal is to facilitate a transparent and well-organized budget development process as part of the larger commitment to provide a world-class education to all students.”

D.M. Therrell High School Panthers Football Team voted Fox 5 High 5 Sports Team of the Week

The D.M. Therrell High School Panthers football team was voted WAGA-Fox 5’s High 5 Sports Team of the Week (Sept. 28-Oct. 2) with over 100,000 votes. The Therrell Panthers are the second team to receive this honor from the High 5 Sports Team during the 2015-2016 football season.

Fox 5 Reporter Cody Chaffins and the Fox 5 team descended on the campus of Therrell High School to broadcast live on Good Day Atlanta for the “Team of the Week” pep rally. Atlanta Public Schools Associate Superintendent of High Schools Dr. Timothy Gadson presented the High 5 Sports Team of the Week trophy to Therrell High School Panthers Head Football Coach Dominic Calloway, his coaching staff and the football team before the entire school body and staff.

Atlanta Board of Education member Jason Esteves, At-Large Seat 9 (Districts 5&6), Jasper Jewell, APS Director of Athletics, Kandice Mitchell, Assistant Director of Athletics and other APS officials were in attendance for the festivities.

South Atlanta High School Head Football Coach Kevin Hill and Mike Perrelli, former head football coach of Therrell High School and current teacher at South Atlanta High School, who both have children with autism, welcomed students, families and the community to the game. Therrell High School senior Torre Sumlin, who has autism, served as the team captain for last night’s game as the Panthers beat the South Atlanta Hornets 30-27 in overtime.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or autism, is a developmental disorder characterized in varying degrees by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. As fans entered the stadium, they received fliers from APS staff members about autism family services and resources provided by Autism Speaks. Attendees wore light blue to show their support. Autism banners hung from the front entrance of Lakewood Stadium and behind the South Atlanta Hornets’ bench.

Atlanta Public Schools’ Department of Special Education provides programming and services for students with autism that encompass social skills instruction, functional communication training, community based instruction, as well as academic and behavioral skills instruction. Programming is based on the whole child and it ensures that the student can generalize the skills taught throughout the school, home, and community.

“American Promise” Screening – Thursday, February 20, 2014

AMERICAN PROMISE will be screened at D.M. Therrell High on Thursday, February 20, 2014 from 5:00-7:30 p.m.

This award-winning documentary spans 13 years as Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson, middle-class African-American parents in Brooklyn, N.Y., turn their cameras on their son, Idris, and his best friend, Seun, who make their way through Dalton, one of the most prestigious private schools in the country. Chronicling the boys’ divergent paths from kindergarten through high school graduation, this provocative, intimate documentary presents complicated truths about America’s struggle to come of age on issues of race, class and opportunity.

Following the film, participants will hear a presentation about strategies to address the challenges faced in education, particularly as it relates to African-American males.

Uplifting celebration of the purpose, lessons of life at 2013 Lowery Lecture

LoweryLEC2013-009More than 400 individuals – mostly seniors from every APS high school – attended the 13th Annual Joseph E. Lowery Lecture Series on Civic Engagement.

The lecture serves as a platform for high school students to listen, learn and engage with some of the nation’s outstanding community leaders and pioneers. Past lecturers include Dr. Bill Cosby, former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher, Judge Glenda Hatchett and Mayor Kasim Reed. LoweryLEC2013-035

This year V-103 radio personality and philanthropist Ryan Cameron delivered a keynote message that resonated with students because it was both humorous and uplifting. This was the first time Rev. Lowery and his family were unable to attend the event, which took place just a day after funeral services for his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Gibson Lowery.

Program participants and attendees made the occasion a celebration of the life and contributions of the Rev. and Mrs. Lowery as civil rights pioneers. LoweryLEC2013-018Mr. Cameron concluded his remarks by announcing that he, along with members of the Therrell High School class of 1987, will pay for uniforms for the school’s basketball team.

Since its inception in 2001, the Lowery Lecture has inspired students by exposing them to dynamic, service-oriented leaders who have made a lasting and positive change in the world. The lecture series was developed by the Atlanta Board of Education in honor of Rev. Lowery’s 80th birthday. Rev. Lowery celebrated his 92nd birthday on October 6th.

Public Hearings Set for Small Schools at Carver, D.M. Therrell, Washington and South Atlanta High Schools

Notice of Public Hearing – Carver High School Campus

The Atlanta Board of Education will hold two public hearings on February 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. and February 26, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. Atlanta Public Schools staff will discuss the transition of the Carver School of the Arts, Carver School of Health Sciences & Research and Carver School of Technology from its official designation as a small school to its proposed designation as a small learning community.

The proposed small learning community will continue to be located on the campus of the New Schools at Carver. The school zone will remain unchanged for students living in the New Schools at Carver zone. Based on this year’s enrollment and next year’s projected enrollment, the Carver campus is expected to serve approximately 1,550 students.

The public will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide written or oral feedback on the proposed changes. All hearings will take place at the New Schools at Carver, located at 55 McDonough Boulevard, Atlanta, Georgia 30315. No vote will be taken at the hearings.

Notice of Public Hearing – South Atlanta High School Campus

The Atlanta Board of Education will hold two public hearings on February 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. and February 26, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. Atlanta Public Schools staff will discuss the transition of the South Atlanta School of Health & Medical Sciences, South Atlanta School of Law & Social Justice and South Atlanta School of Computer Animation & Design from its official designation as a small school to its proposed designation as a small learning community.

The proposed small learning community will continue to be located on the campus of South Atlanta High School. The school zone will remain unchanged for students living in the South Atlanta High School zone. Based on this year’s enrollment and next year’s projected enrollment, the South Atlanta campus is expected to serve approximately 900 students.

The public will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide written or oral feedback on the proposed changes.  All hearings will take place at South Atlanta High School, located at 800 Hutchens Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30354. No vote will be taken at the hearings.

Notice of Public Hearing – D.M. Therrell High School Campus

The Atlanta Board of Education will hold two public hearings on February 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. and February 26, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. Atlanta Public Schools staff will discuss the transition of the D.M. Therrell School of Health Sciences & Research, D.M. Therrell School of Law, Government & Public Policy, and D.M. Therrell School of Technology, Engineering, Math & Science from its official designation as a small school to its proposed designation as a small learning community.

The proposed small learning community will continue to be located on the campus of  D. M. Therell High School. The school zone will remain unchanged for students living in the Therrell High School zone. Based on this year’s enrollment and next year’s projected enrollment, the Therrell campus is expected to serve approximately 900 students.

The public will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide written or oral feedback on the proposed changes.  All hearings will take place at D.M.Therrell High School, located at 3099 Panther Trail, Atlanta, Georgia 30311. No vote will be taken at the hearings.

Notice of Public Hearings – Washington High School Campus

The Atlanta Board of Education will hold two public hearings on February 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. and February 26, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. Atlanta Public Schools staff will discuss the transition of the Booker T. Washington School of Banking, Finance & Investment, and Booker T. Washington School of Health Sciences & Nutrition from its official designation as a small school to its proposed designation as a small learning community.

The proposed small learning community will continue to be located on the campus of Washington High School. The school zone will remain unchanged for students living in the Washington High School zone. Based on this year’s enrollment and next year’s projected enrollment, the Washington campus is expected to serve approximately 850 students.

The public will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide written or oral feedback on the proposed changes.  All hearings will take place at Washington High School, located at 45 Whitehouse Drive, Atlanta, Georgia 30314. No vote will be taken at the hearings
