We here at www.TalkUpAPS.com know that our primary mission is share the incredible things that are going on around the district to show how APS is making a difference in students’ lives. So we think we know effective communication when we see it. That’s why we’re so happy to pass along a little memo about the accomplishments of Inman Middle School, assembled by Principal Dr. Betsy Bockman. We couldn’t break this down any better ourselves! Our School
Did you know that …
* Inman Middle School placed 10th in the state in eighth-grade social studies achievement on the CRCT. The percentage of students EXCEEDING state standards is 52 percent. Inman placed seventh in the state in sixth-grade science achievement with 48 percent EXCEEDING state standards, and placed sixth in the state in seventh-grade science with 69 percent of student EXCEEDING state standards. Many of the schools scoring higher than Inman are much less diverse than Inman. A few are magnet schools for high achievers.
* Thirty-four Atlanta Public Schools (APS) elementary and middle schools were recognized for their academic achievement and improved performance on state standardized tests by the second annual State Superintendent Distinguished Achievement Awards program. The top APS state award winners are Williams Elementary (8), West Manor Elementary (4), INMAN MIDDLE (3), Jackson Elementary (3), Turner Middle (3), and Harper-Archer Middle (3).
* The State Superintendent’s Distinguished Achievement Awards are based on the performance of students on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT), the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT), the End of Course Tests (EOCT) and the state Writing Tests. The awards recognize schools in two categories – improvement and achievement. Specifically, the improvement category recognizes the 10 schools in each subject area and grade that demonstrated the greatest improvement in the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards. The achievement category recognizes the ten schools in each subject area and grade that demonstrated the highest percentage of students scoring in the “exceeds” category.
* The inaugural Inman Middle School 5K Fun Run raised over $2,000 for the PTA! We had great weather and almost 200 runners. None of this could have happened without all those who volunteered their time to help with the event.

In Academics:
* The Inman Eagle Debate Team continues its winning tradition this year. In the Atlanta Urban Debate League Tournament on Oct. 10, First Place Individual Speaker Award went to Sam Heller, Second Place Individual Speaker Award winner was Gilbert Young, Heller & Young also received the Second Place Team Award, and Jaimon Cornell received Fifteenth Place for the Novice Speaker Award. The Inman Eagle Debate Team meets on Tuesday afternoons in the Media Center from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Debate Team is open to all students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. In Athletics:
* Cross Country – Great Final Meet! On Saturday, the Inman Cross Country Team competed in its last run of the season. The team came out in high spirits and enthusiasm, on a crisp October morning, and “ran” away with first place overall, in both the boys’ and girls’ competition at the Paideia Invitational Cross Country Meet. Top medal finishers were Sonny Romeo in first place, with a time of 12:15, and in third place was Ike Hammond, with a time of 12:29. There were no medal finishers for the girls, but overall, they dominated in placement taking first place. Congratulations, team!
In Extracurricular Activities:
* Eighth-grade students at Inman Middle School used the Picturing America curriculum, developed by the National Endowment for the Humanities, to create works of art focusing on the themes of freedom and equality. Picturing America encourages a deeper appreciation of America’s history and character through the interdisciplinary study and understanding of its art. Join these young artists in celebrating their exhibition. Student artworks will be on display in the High Museum’s Greene Family Education Center from Nov. 10, 2009, through January 11, 2010. * Pamela Andrews, Mark Washington and Chris Wharton are all in the quarterfinal round for Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education (AFEE). Formerly known as the Michaels Family Awards, the AFAEE was created to honor the tireless dedication of teachers and principals in the Atlanta Public Schools who significantly impact student achievement and self-esteem. The award is meant to highlight excellence in the classroom, in character development and most importantly in improving the achievement levels of our students as reflected by comprehensive test data.
