Good luck to North Atlanta High’s boys’ swim team at state meet this weekend

We’re crossing our fingers this weekend for North Atlanta High‘s boys’ swim team as it hits the water this weekend for the state swimming and diving championships being held at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Sophomores Dillon Mabrey and Sam Boatwright, junior Rehan Bhinwandalla and senior Neal Shadle qualified for the state meet in late January in the 200-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle relays, while Boatwright has qualified in five other individual events.

The North Atlanta boys, who along with the girls’ team are under the tutelage of Coach Lois Brackin, also bested Grady High in this past weekend’s APS swim championships held at the Fosell Fann Recreation Center.

“This season has definitely been the best year for us,” says Brackin, who’s coached the team for four years. A North Atlanta grad, she also teaches ninth-grade literature and AP language and composition. “Their times are better this season, and while we’ve always had a family atmophere as a team, this year in especially the teammates have been really supportive of one another. And we’ve gotten tremendous support from the athletic department this year. Every year it gets better.”

And considering the youth of the team, and strong interest over Sutton Middle School, it could get even better. “We look forward to next year and all the incoming freshmen who are looking forward to swim,” Brackin says. “We’ve had parents at Sutton already calling this season, wanting to start a JV team.”
