Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) Cadets Victoria Hood and Sade Suggs will join 100 young women from across metro Atlanta this weekend to participate in the “Girls Who Rule the World” camp in Roberta, Georgia.

Held Sept. 16-18 and sponsored by the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Army, “Girls Who Rule the World” is designed to prepare young girls for success by providing students with extensive leadership development, team building and mentoring activities. The program aims to enhance the development of young girls and provide a forum to expose them to the benefits and importance of positive self-image, responsible personal conduct, respect for self and others, educational achievement, and cultural enrichment. Victoria and Sade were selected based on  a counselor nomination and an essay submission.

While attending the camp, Hood and Suggs and other participants will hear from U.S. Army representatives who will engage students by conducting leadership development activities and team-building exercises, delivering remarks to parents and other influencers, and demonstrating Army technology. In addition to the Army’s onsite participation, business and community leaders, media personalities, and Mrs. Harvey will share their insights through a variety of activities.

For her part, Dr. Mona Venning, JROTC army instructor at CSKYWLA, will serve as a mentor during this weekend’s camp. Dr. Venning will share her military and academic journey, and how she was inspired to pursue a doctorate degree while serving in the U. S. Army.

“I’m so excited that our girls will receive the opportunity to meet with business leaders and others and learn about internships, military program referrals, and educational, career and personal development,” Dr. Venning said. “Cadet Suggs and Cadet Hood are the epitome of excellence and will represent CSK in the best possible way.”

A member of the Superintendents Young Ambassadors committee for JROTC, Victoria is a Color Guard commander, drill team commander and JROTC executive officer. Sade is also a member of SYA, Color Guard, drill team, and serves as a battalion commander.

“I can’t wait to experience it all,” Sade said. “I’m very grateful for this opportunity, and I look forward to having a great time at camp this weekend.”
